Malika Taranum Noor Jahan’s 94th birthday
Malika-e-Tarannum Noor Jehan (Allah Wasai) was born on 21 September 1926 in Kasur. Her real name was Allah Wasai, while Noor Jehan was her filmy name. She started her career at the age of 9 as a singer child star from Kolkata, India. She started her artistic career in 1935 with “pind di kurri”. After separation she started her film career in Pakistan. she sang many songs with Ahmad Rushdi, Mehdi Hassan, Masood Rana and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. She proved her self not only in the field of singing but also in the filed of acting. Noor Jehan played the lead role in the 1942 film “Khandan”. As a lead actress this was Noor Jehan’s first film which was a success.
Her last film as an actress was Ghalib, which was released in 1961. She became very popular during the 1965 war because of her national songs. In 1965 war she sang “ay watan kay sajelay jawanoon”, “Rang laye ga shahedoon ka lahoo” and many others. In 1965, she received the Pride of performance award. She was awarded the highest civilian Honor “Sitara-e-Imtiaz”, “Tamgha-e-Imtiaz”. She died of heart failure on 23 December 2000.
