Popularity of Turkish drama “Diliris Ertugrul” in Pakistan

Diliris Ertugrul, the Turkish portrayal of life as a real-time hero, gained massive popularity in Pakistan lately. The drama focuses on the life of Ertugrul, his father was the leader of Kayi Tribe of Oghuz Turks who fled from Western Central Asia to escape Mongolian conquests. Ertugrul’s dominion over Söğüt on frontier of the Byzantine Empire led to a chain of events that founded the Ottoman Empire which ruled over a major part of Earth for 600 years.

Turkish dramas gained significant fame when they were first introduced in Pakistan. They presented a different outlook and provided viewers a completely different perspective. Their instant popularity was thought to have presented a threat to Pakistan’s drama industry and Pakistani drama producers even campaigned to have them banned.

  • Popularity of Diliris Ertugrul

Dirilis Ertugrul was an instant hit among the Pakistani audience. It’s viewership increased significantly in a matter of days after it was aired in Pakistan. There were a number of factors that contributed to this.

1) Production Value

The drama has been written and created by an acclaimed filmmaker, Mehmet Bozdag. Not only the script was written well but the cast and direction were also to the point. A highly famed stunt team from Hollywood was hired to train the actors. All this contributed to making a great serial which motivated the audience to watch it.

2) Historical Genre

One of the reasons Dirilis Ertugrul appealed to the audience is its genre. Pakistan has so far failed to produce serials or movies of historical genre. As industry is lacking in this respect so any historical serial such as Game of Thrones, Hurrem Sultan, and Dirilis Ertugrul comes as a breath of fresh air.

3) Endorsement

Like Hurrem Sultan, a historical drama of Ottoman empire, Dirilis Ertugral was greatly anticipated the main reason being an endorsement of Prime Minister Imran Khan who not only praised the serial but also directed relevant people to have it dubbed to the Urdu language so it can be made available to common people.

Despite being a populist leader, this endorsement was not a surprise as it celebrated the life of a hero. The Prime Minister has worked greatly for brotherly ties between various Muslim countries. He had various meetings particularly with leaders of Malaysia and Turkey. All three of them agreed to promote the Islamic Brotherhood and the intention for endorsing this serial was not only to motivate the young generation to work harder but also to establish feelings of fraternity between two Muslim countries.

4) Portrayal of Muslims

As Pakistani industry itself lacks in the historical genre, the only source of watching Muslim heroes of past is through Indian serials and movies and those in almost all cases put not only Muslim heroes but any Muslim character in a bad light and serve no other purpose than aggravating Muslim audience and distorting the history. A recent example is that of Allaudin Khilji who is presented as nothing more than a barbarian.

Dirilis Ertugrul is one of the dramas that sheds a positive light on Islamic figures. It tells a tale of the struggle of Muslim heroes and their victories. This not only appeals to the audience but also serves as a motivation.

5) Portrayal of Women

While Pakistani and Indian dramas are famous for their portrayal of ‘Damsels in Distress’ and mostly produce serials revolving around a fragile woman this is not the case for Dirilis Ertugrul, where women are represented as strong characters who rather than living a life of misery have significant control over their and others’ lives. They also act as chieftains and play an important role in worldly matters plus their life is not confined to their households only. They’re also capable of fighting with swords and daggers. All this presents a new outlook to women who are the main audience of television.

6) Islamic Values

Since the show focuses on the life of a Muslim leader it also portrays various scenarios where the protagonist consults with Islamic leaders who guide him out of difficulties with references to the Quran and Hadith.

The show mainly highlights the Islamic values of Justice, Honor, and Bravery. This attracts a large population as it teaches them valuable lessons in a manner they find entertaining.

The show also represents the days of glory of Islam
